What is mullein?!
Mullein or Verbascum thapsus, is a medicinal herb, long used in Europe and Western Asia.
Traditionally, the flowers, leaves and roots of the mullein plant have all been used for respiratory conditions and can now be found as herbal supplements or teas in many health food stores and sometimes chemists! Ask us here at the Thornbury Apothecary about getting you mullein tea!
What’s it good for?
Mullein is often indicated in respiratory conditions including asthma, cold and cough, bronchitis and COPD or emphysema. Mullein can also be used topically within the ear for ear aches but only where the eardrum has not been perforated.
This lovely herb has a number of actions. It can help the body expel excess mucus as well as helping to sooth your chest and throat, this can protect the lining of your lungs and throat, helping to reduce irritation and inflammation. This will help to relieve your cough, while helping to heal internal tissue.
What do I do with it?
Mullein can be prepared in a number of ways but perhaps the most easily accessible is as a tea. For relief during a cold or cough take about 2 teaspoons of dried mullein and pour a cup of boiling water over. Let steep for about 5-10 minutes before drinking.
