Ear Candling

History of Ear Candling

Although ear candling is said to be an ancient practice, its origin and history are unclear as there's no fossil remains or ear candles found in a museum, but rather an oral tradition passed down through generations.

However, the manufacturer of Naturhelix ear candles, a Hungarian company, "have found surprising and undeniable evidence for the ancient use of ear candling as a health-promoting method: Hungarian ethnographers spent a long period of time in the ’90s with the ancient Siberian Khanty people and did ethnographic research on their lives" (CMA, UK).

How Ear Candling takes place with Anna from Thornbury Apothecary.

During the procedure you will lie comfortably on a massage table with one side resting up as you lay your head on the pillow. The candles are 40 cm long and 1 cm in diameter and are certified organic and vegan friendly. The candles are TGA approved Practitioner - only candles as they are handmade in NSW. Once the candle is placed in a cone it is lit, the tapered end of the cone is gently placed inside your ear.

A towel is placed over your head and hair as well as a paper plate surrounding the base of the candle for caution. The flame draws out the wax and as it does this you will feel a warmth from the flame and hissing from the burning of the organic material.

Each ear takes 30 minutes with approximately six 2-inch cuts as the candle burns down giving a balanced healing. The candles are tapped when cut so the wax falls out as seen to the right and deposited on the paper towel. Meditative music is played during the session so that you can relax and allow the candle to do its work.

During the first 24-48 hours after ear candling is performed, it is best to protect the ears from wind, cold, and no water to enter your ear during a shower - please where a shower cap. Within 48-72 hours the normal production of wax will again begin.
