What is Reiki and how it can benefit you?
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese form of complementary therapy. It stems from the Eastern belief that vital energy flows through our bodies. Much like “qi” (also known as chi in the West), the Chinese belief of a universal life force that flows through all living things, reiki is a form of energy healing that works to restore our bodies’ energy flow. In Japanese, rei means universal, and ki means life energy. These words combine to form reiki, meaning “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign”. Our bodies' energy fields can become stagnant or blocked from physical or emotional traumas, injury, and pain. It is believed that with time these blockages can develop into illness. And so, reiki practitioners work to unblock stagnant energy in our body and restore the flow.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki practitioners primarily use palm-healing or hands-on healing techniques during therapy sessions. Through gentle touch or hovering over wounds, universal energy transfers through their palms to deliver energy to your body in order to improve the flow and support physical and emotional restoration. Practitioners will typically hold their hands in certain positions for 3-10 minutes to allow for the energy transfer to occur, or until they sense that energy has stopped flowing.
Other techniques may include, centring, clearing, beaming, extracting harmful energies, infusing, and/or smoothing and raking the aura. Occasionally, practitioners may enable healing through the use of crystals and chakra wands, but traditionally reiki therapy does not rely on any instruments beyond the reiki practitioner.
Benefits of reiki treatment?
Whilst empirical research is still inconclusive of the advantages that reiki has, widespread testimonies have suggested the effectiveness of this treatment, particularly when used complimentary to others. Reiki therapy promotes deep relaxation, stress and depressive symptom relief, as well as overall improvement of health and well-being.
When used alongside other formal medical treatments, Reiki may help to treat:
