Unraveling Adrenal Fatigue: Recognising Symptoms and Empowering Restorative Strategies
Adrenal fatigue has been a bit of a hot topic lately! You may have seen various symptoms and remedies plastered all over your social media feeds! But if you’re anything like me you’ve been left wondering “What even is Adrenal Fatigue?”. So let’s take a look!
Adrenal Fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands, located at the top of your kidneys, are overworked and fatigued. Adrenal fatigue is often attributed to chronic mental and psychical stress and a perpetual state of “fight or flight” arousal. Your adrenal glands are responsible for producing essential hormones such as Cortisol, Aldosterone and, you guessed it, Adrenaline!
These hormones control metabolism, blood pressure regulation, inflammation, your sleep/wake cycle, and your “fight/flight” response.
Therefore as you can imagine, if your adrenal glands are fatigued some symptoms you may experience are:
Fatigue
Body Aches
Low blood pressure
Lightheadedness
Unexplained weight loss or gain
Loss of body hair
Trouble falling asleep or waking
Life is very rarely as easy as simply “reducing stress”, so here is a list of potential remedies and tips for supporting adrenal glands and aiding adrenal fatigue:
Meditation - A great way to switch off the fight or flight response in your body, giving your adrenals a well deserved and needed break!
Practicing good sleep hygiene - One of the key factors for combating adrenal fatigue is a balanced sleep cycle. You know what that means! Limit that screen time in the evenings! I know it’s hard, but try opting for a good book and a cuppa sleepy time tea instead. Try to have a fixed wake up time! It’s so tempting when we have a day off to take advantage and get in those extra “ZZZ’s”, but trust, your body is craving consistency. Lastly, ensure your room is dark when you’re starting to wind down! You don’t want to confuse your body and throw its circadian rhythm all out of whack!
Reducing Sugar and Caffeine - It may seem counterintuitive but caffeine and sugar overstimulate your adrenals, causing your energy and blood sugar levels to spike, and then crash, in the end robbing you of your energy!
Give Adrenal Cocktails a try - Essentially, these cocktails boost the necessary vitamins and minerals which may assist your adrenal fatigue.
There are many recipes for adrenal cocktails out there! Here is the general formula and a couple of suggestions:
Vitamin C - Orange, Guava or Pineapple
