Empower Your Cycle: Natural Remedies for Menstrual Discomfort

Menstrual Health is so important, and is often overlooked. So many people experience discomfort and pain when we menstruate, so let’s talk about some natural ways to support our menstrual health and to remedy the pain that is so often associated with our cycles.

3 ways to combat menstrual discomfort

Hydration and Antioxidant Power for Menstrual Wellness

Drinking plenty of water can help reduce bloating and ease menstrual discomfort. Drinking water also helps to flush out excess fluids, in turn reducing bloating commonly experienced during menstruation. Proper hydration can prevent water retention, which often contributes to bloating and discomfort. Herbal teas and water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelon can also contribute to hydration.

Peppermint tea has calming effects and can help relax muscles, reducing menstrual cramps and discomfort. Raspberry Leaf Tea is believed to tone the uterus and may help regulate menstrual cycles, and is often used to support overall reproductive health. Both Peppermint and Raspberry Leaf contain antioxidants. Increasing your antioxidant intake around your time of the month, can assist with menstrual pains.

Menstrual pain is often associated with inflammation in the body. Antioxidants help combat inflammation by neutralising free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, which may potentially ease menstrual cramps and discomfort. Antioxidants can also improve blood flow and circulation, potentially reducing the severity of menstrual cramps by promoting relaxation in the uterine muscles. Our Merry Berry Tea is high in antioxidants, containing Blackberries, Elderberries, Raspberry Bits, Rosehip Shells and Strawberry Bits.

Soaking the pain away with Heat Therapy

Applying heat to the lower abdomen can relax muscles and relieve menstrual pain, and soaking in warm water can help relax the muscles in the abdomen and lower back, reducing the intensity of menstrual cramps. Warm water increases blood circulation, which can help alleviate pain and reduce cramping by improving blood flow to the pelvic area.

A warm bath can provide a calming effect on both the body and mind. It can help reduce stress, which in turn may help reduce the perception of pain during menstruation. Beyond specifically targeting menstrual discomfort, a bath can offer overall relaxation and comfort, promoting a sense of well-being during a challenging time of the month.

To enhance the benefits of a warm bath for menstrual discomfort, consider adding Epsom salts or Bath Salt blends to the bathwater. Epsom salts contain magnesium, which can help relax muscles and ease cramps. Our Grounding & Stress Relief Bath Salts contain Epsom Salt, Himalayan Salt, Dead Sea Salt, to help with muscle relaxation. This blend also contains Lavender, Chamomile, Rose, Jasmine, Cornflower Petals, Patchouli and Cedarwood Oil, all of which create an atmosphere of relaxation to help you melt your stresses away.

Essential Oils for Soothing Menstrual Aches

Several essential oils have properties that can help alleviate menstrual pains and cramps when applied topically with a carrier oil. Here are some commonly used ones:

  • Lavender Oil: Known for its calming properties, lavender oil can help relax muscles and reduce discomfort associated with menstrual cramps.

  • Clary Sage Oil: Clary sage has antispasmodic properties that can help relieve muscle tension and reduce menstrual cramps.

  • Peppermint Oil: Peppermint oil contains menthol, which provides a cooling sensation and can help soothe muscle cramps and ease pain.

  • Ginger Oil: Ginger oil has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce inflammation and alleviate menstrual cramps.

When using essential oils topically for menstrual pains, it's crucial to dilute them properly with a carrier oil to avoid skin irritation. Suitable carrier oils include coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil (we stock coconut, almond and jojoba in our shop although not currently available for purchase online). A safe dilution ratio is typically 1–3 drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil, but this can vary based on sensitivity. To use these oils:

  • Create a Blend: Mix a few drops of the chosen essential oil with a carrier oil in a small container or bottle.

  • Apply to the Abdomen: Gently massage the oil blend onto the lower abdomen in a circular motion. Start with a small amount and gradually add more if needed.

  • Test for Sensitivity: Before widespread use, perform a patch test on a small area of skin to ensure you don't have any adverse reactions to the oil blend.

Always purchase high-quality, pure essential oils from reputable sources to ensure safety and effectiveness. Additionally, if you have any underlying health conditions, are pregnant, or are on medications, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before using essential oils for menstrual pain relief.
