The Importance of Biotin (B7)

Biotin.jpeg

Biotin (B7) can be acquired from your diet but is also made by intestinal bacteria. This is why having a healthy, impermeable gut with a diverse microbiome is to important!

B7 is found in high amounts in soybeans, wheat bran, mushrooms, eggs & avocados. B7 is part of a co-enzyme needed for metabolism & synthesis of amino acids, fats & glycogen (that's what glucose is called when it's stored in the body for later). It's also needed for DNA & gene expression.

Biotin absorption is reduced by anti-convulsants, antibiotics & alcohol intake, calorie-restricted dieting, & pregnancy & lactation. Signs of deficiency include;

- Depression, lethargy, and hallucinations

- Numb or tingling sensation in the arms and legs

- Red, scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth

- Hair loss and alopecia

The good news is that there's no report of toxicity, so we can all continue to have (home-made) smashed avo with eggs on toast!

B vitamins are essential for healthy energy metabolism, and also handy for preventing hangovers at the right dose. If you're interested in reducing fatigue and boosting mental clarity, definitely get in touch with me for a chat about which B complex would be best for you!
