How to use the facial gua sha and jade roller?
Back in 2019, guasha and jade rolling facials were all the rave on social media – since being replaced by countless other home skin rituals. However, this trend dates way back thousands of years to the Yuan Dynasty in China, and is one we think you shouldn’t neglect!
If you missed the boat and have know idea what this strange word means… guasha 刮痧 (guāshā - pronounced gwah-shah), literally translating to "scrape sand", involves dragging a smooth, flat, hand-held scraping tool along the skin. Sounds scary? It isn’t! In Chinese medicine, guasha has many benefits; typically used to alleviate acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain, relieve certain illnesses (such as upper respiratory illnesses), improve circulation, reduce inflammation, support the immune system, and release tension areas where the movement is restricted. It was also used for beautifying purposes like de-puffing and lifting skin.
There are specific things you need to know before scraping your skin, including how to properly lubricate your skin pre-scraping, the direction to scrape in, amount of pressure to apply etc. So if you’re wanting to avoid the learning curve but still reap the benefits the more modern jade roller may be more up your alley. Similarly to guasha facialing, jade rolling is great for relieving facial tension, reducing eye puffiness, improving lymphatic flow throughout the body and overall relaxation. For those wanting an extra zing, try leaving your roller in the fridge and using it cold on your skin.
You’ll also notice that these tools are designed in different types of semi-precious stones. Traditionally, they are made out of jade, a ‘yin stone’ with a cooling nature, known to alleviate inflammation. Jade promotes calmness, balance, positivity, and protects its user from negative energy. If you’re looking for something a little different you can also choose stones like rose quartz – known for it’s healing and anti-aging properties, as well as a promoter of self-acceptance, self-love, harmony and trust, and amethyst – known to prevent intoxication and overindulgence, as well as soothe redness, breakouts, or otherwise inflamed skin.
